Konami released Ver. 1.1.3 of Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse today, October 16. The update is aimed at the bug where the game may fail to launch or sit on a black screen with high refresh rate monitors. Konami itself says it expects the update to improve the issue, but that it may still occur in certain environments, and it apologizes for the continued inconvenience to players who have been waiting to play. On October 15, in our launch coverage, we told you about the problem with monitors above 120 Hz. Now there is a patch that goes after it, though Konami does not call it fully solved.
What is happening
According to Konami’s notice, on high refresh rate monitors the game may fail to launch and show only a black screen. PC Gamer wrote that the game booted to a black screen the first time it started it. After a few minutes of troubleshooting, it deduced that the game would not display on a monitor set higher than 120 Hz. The same piece mentions another quirk: with the in-game 120 fps cap selected, the framerate lurched down every time a cutscene played.
Konami’s notice only covers the black screen and the failed launch. It does not mention the frame cap behavior in cutscenes.
What to do
- Update to Ver. 1.1.3. It is the patch Konami released for this bug.
- If the game still does not launch after the update, Konami asks players to contact its Customer Support. The company says it is still working toward a full resolution and will share more on future updates as soon as they are ready.
- In the meantime, PC Gamer’s finding is a useful reference: in its case, the problem showed up with the monitor above 120 Hz.
PC requirements
The patch does not change the requirements. These are from the Steam page:
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| GPU | GeForce GTX 1650 | GeForce RTX 3060 |
| CPU | Intel Core i5 8400 | Intel Core i5 10400 |
| RAM | 16 GB | 16 GB |
| Storage | 10 GB | 10 GB |
| OS | Windows 11 64-bit | Windows 11 64-bit |
Every GPU on our list clears the minimum. The GTX 1650 clears the minimum but grades F against the recommended, so it will struggle. The RX 7600 grades C against the recommended: tight. The RTX 3060 meets the recommended with a B, and the RTX 5080 reaches S.
Valve has not verified the game on Steam Deck yet. Our spec-based estimate gives it an F, and you can see the details on its Steam Deck page.
