Star Trek: Outposts Unknown launches tomorrow: PC requirements and the GPUs you need

Star Trek: Outposts Unknown, the outpost builder from Magic Fuel Games and Playstack, launches tomorrow, October 20, on Steam for $32.99. For now it is Windows PC only: the studio confirmed in its latest devlog that Mac support will follow in a future patch. If you plan to play on day one, two things matter: the 16 GB of RAM it asks for even at minimum, and a recommended CPU that sits much higher than the GPU.

Star Trek: Outposts Unknown PC requirements

These are the requirements from the Steam page, the same ones the studio posted in its devlog:

According to Magic Fuel Games, the minimum lets you play “at reduced visual fidelity”, while the recommended spec is for enjoying the game without compromising its look. The studio also says the game features complex logistics and deep simulation, which fits the CPU jump: from a Ryzen 5 2600 at minimum to a Ryzen 7 7800X3D recommended. RAM does not change: 16 GB in both tiers, so 8 GB leaves you out.

Which GPUs run it

We checked the requirements against the most common graphics cards. Grades are measured against the recommended requirement and assume 16 GB of RAM:

• Clear the recommended: the RTX 3060 and RTX 4060 are solid (grade B), and an RTX 4070 or RX 9070 XT runs smooth (grade A).
• Clear the minimum but fall short of the recommended: the RTX 2060, RX 7600 and Arc B580 are tight (grade C); the GTX 1660 Super and RTX 3050 will launch it but struggle (grade D).
• Fall short of the minimum: GTX 1650, GTX 1060 6GB and RX 580.

If you have an RTX 3060, you are right at the recommended spec on the GPU side. Check your processor too, since that is where this game asks the most.

What about Steam Deck?

Valve has not verified it yet. Our spec-based estimate puts it below the minimum (grade F), so it is worth waiting for the official rating. You can follow it on the game’s Steam Deck page.
