Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 launches tomorrow: PC requirements and which GPUs run it

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 launches tomorrow, October 14, on Steam. It is the sequel to Auroch Digital’s retro shooter, published by Devolver Digital and Big Fan Games, and the good news for PC players is that it asks for little: 8 GB of RAM, 13 GB of storage, and a GTX 1650 or RX 570 to play on High at 1080p and 60 fps. It brings a branching campaign with more than 30 levels, 40+ new enemies from the four Chaos factions, and two playable characters: Ultramarine Malum Caedo and Sister of Battle Nyra Veyrath.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 PC requirements

These are the official requirements from the Steam page:

Both tiers require DirectX 12. The minimum targets Low quality at 1080p and 60 fps; the recommended targets High quality at 1080p and 60 fps. On Steam the game is Windows only.

An oddity: the minimum asks for more GPU than the recommended

Look at the table closely and something does not add up. On canirun, the minimum GPU scores 9,250 and the recommended GPU scores 7,950: the Low quality tier asks for more graphics power than the High quality tier. Steam does not explain the gap, so take it with a grain of salt until the studio clears it up.

This affects two well-known cards. The GTX 1650, which is the recommended card itself, and the RX 580 both grade B (Solid) measured against the recommended, but our check does not mark them as clearing the minimum, because their scores sit below what the minimum asks for.

Which GPUs run it with no doubts

Any of these clears both the minimum and the recommended, and every grade is measured against the recommended requirement:

• GTX 1060 6GB: B (Solid). See what else the GTX 1060 6GB runs.
• GTX 1660 Super, RTX 3050, RTX 2060 and Arc B580: A (Smooth). If you have a GTX 1660 Super, you are in good shape.
• RTX 3060, RTX 4060, RX 6600 XT and RX 7600: S (Overkill). With an RTX 3060 you have room to spare.

For memory, 8 GB covers both the minimum and the recommended. Our grades assume 16 GB of RAM.

What about the Steam Deck?

In our data, Valve has not given Boltgun 2 a Steam Deck rating yet. GamingOnLinux reports that the game received the Steam Deck Verified and Steam Machine Verified badges ahead of launch, but until that shows up in the Valve rating we use, we are not treating it as confirmed. For now we only have a spec-based estimate, which compares the numbers on the Steam page with the handheld’s hardware, and it does not place the Deck above the minimum. That is an estimate, not a test on the device. You can follow the status on its Steam Deck page.
