Gears of War: E-Day Pre-Load Is Open: PC Requirements and the GPU You Need

Gears of War: E-Day pre-load opened today on Steam and Xbox on PC. It launches October 6 and requires a GPU with hardware ray tracing, which rules out many GTX and Radeon RX 5000 cards no matter how fast they are. Official requirements, dates and whether your PC makes the cut.

Gears of War: E-Day is ready to pre-load. Since 8 a.m. Pacific today, September 29, the download is open on Steam, Xbox on PC and Xbox Series X|S, and it is worth starting early: it is 115 GB. The Premium Edition kicks off on October 1 with up to five days of early access, and the full launch is October 6.

The requirement that rules out a lot of PCs

The Steam page is blunt about it: you need a GPU with hardware ray tracing. It is a requirement, not an optional setting: games with the same demand, like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle or Doom: The Dark Ages, simply do not launch without it. That excludes cards that would otherwise have the raw power:

  • Every GTX card, including the GTX 1080 Ti and the GTX 1660 Super.
  • Radeon RX 5000 cards, like the RX 5700 XT.
  • Most integrated graphics without ray tracing hardware.

An honest note about our grade: canirun grades on GPU power and RAM. If you have a GTX or an RX 5000 card, the grade may say you clear the bar, but this game will most likely not launch on your card. Check this before you look at the grade.
