Metro Last Light Redux and Metro 2033 Redux got the Redux Next-Gen Update on PC today, October 22. It is free for everyone who already owns the games, and it brings exactly what a 2014 game was missing on current hardware: 4K resolution, uncapped frame rates and DLSS support. If it is already in your library, this is a good time to head back into the tunnels. If it is not, it is currently 90% off on Steam, at $1.99.
What the update brings
Here is what the official Steam announcement confirms:
- 4K and uncapped frame rates on PC, in both games.
- DLSS support.
- Spatial Audio support.
- Bug fixes and tweaks specific to each game. The full list is in the patch notes at the end of the announcement.
The October 1 announcement had already made it clear that this is not a full remaster or remake. These are improvements to the original Redux releases, aimed at modern hardware.
What you need to do
Nothing special: the update is live now and there is nothing extra to buy. The update also adds Deep Silver Account support. Scan the in-game QR code and sign in to unlock an exclusive comic book. Each game you link (Metro 2033, Last Light or Exodus) gives you one entry in a giveaway for copies of Metro 2039, which launches February 4, 2027. Signing up for the Deep Silver newsletter adds one more entry, for up to four in total. The giveaway terms are in the same announcement.
Metro Last Light Redux PC requirements
These are the Windows requirements from the Steam page:
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| GPU | GTX 750 Ti 2 GB or Radeon R7 260X 2 GB | GTX 1660 6 GB or Radeon RX 590 8 GB |
| CPU | Core i5-4690 or Ryzen 3 1200 | Core i5-8600 or Ryzen 5 3600 |
| RAM | 4 GB | 8 GB |
| Storage | 20 GB | 20 GB |
| OS | Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit | Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit |
Both tiers call for DirectX 11.
Which GPUs run it
Every GPU we checked clears the minimum, so the real question is how much headroom you have. Grades are measured against the recommended requirement:
- Between minimum and recommended: the GTX 1650 clears the minimum but grades D (Struggles), so it will have a hard time. The GTX 1060 6GB and RX 580 grade C (Tight).
- Meet the recommended: the GTX 1660 Super and RTX 3050 grade B (Solid).
- With room to spare: the RTX 3060 and RTX 4060 grade A (Smooth).
What about Steam Deck?
Valve rates it Verified on Steam Deck. You can find the details on the game’s Steam Deck page.
