The Witcher 3 Remastered Is Out: PC Requirements, Steam Deck and Whether Your PC Runs It

The Witcher 3 Remastered is free if you already own the game, broke its Steam player record and raised the bar: the minimum is now a GTX 1660 with 12 GB of RAM. What changed, how it plays on Steam Deck and how your PC grades.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launched today, September 29, on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. On PC it is a free upgrade for anyone who already owns the game, and players came back in force: on day one it passed 120,000 concurrent players on Steam, beating the 103,329 record the game set in January 2020, when the Netflix series premiered.

The less happy part is for PCs with a few years on them: the Remastered asks for a lot more than the original.

The Witcher 3 Remastered PC requirements

These are the official requirements from the Steam page:

The minimum targets 1080p at 30 fps on Low; the recommended, 1080p at 60 fps on High. CD Projekt also published ray tracing profiles, and the top one is steep: path tracing at 4K calls for an RTX 5080 with DLSS and Frame Generation.

What changed from the original

The 2015 game asked for a GTX 660 and 6 GB of RAM at minimum, and a GTX 1070 with 8 GB recommended. The biggest jump is not the graphics card but the memory:

  • A PC with a GTX 1070 and 8 GB, the original’s recommended setup, still clears the GPU bar but falls short on RAM: the minimum is now 12 GB.
  • It now asks for an SSD. On a hard drive, expect long loads and hitches while you ride across the map.
  • The CPU bar moves up too, from an i5-2500K to an i5-8400 at minimum.

We already updated the game’s page on canirun with the new requirements, so the grade you see today is against the Remastered, not the 2015 release.

What about Steam Deck?

Still playable, with less headroom than before. On the Deck preset it holds around 40 to 44 fps in the open world and drops to about 30 in dense areas like Novigrad: 5 to 10 fps below the original, according to testing by Steam Deck HQ and RPG Site. If you prefer stability, a 30 fps lock is the safe pick.
