Penguin Colony launches today on PC: GTX 1080 minimum, does your GPU make the cut?

Penguin Colony, the cosmic horror game from ORIGAME DIGITAL (the studio behind Umurangi Generation) and publisher Fellow Traveller, launches today, October 16, on Steam at 10am PT. It was originally set for October 8 to line up with LudoNarraCon, but the studio pushed it back a few days. It said the game was finished and ran well, and that the extra time was for tweaks, localization and some DLC for launch. On PC, the spec sheet is what stands out: it asks for little storage and little memory, but a GTX 1080 as the minimum GPU. That leaves several very common cards below the line.

Penguin Colony PC requirements

These are the requirements from the Steam store page. For now there are only minimum specs. The recommended section just says you need a 64-bit processor and operating system.

It also lists DirectX 10. Two details are worth knowing. The processor is listed only as “i7”, with no generation or model, so it is not much of a guide. And on Steam the game is listed for Windows only, with no Mac or Linux version.

Which GPUs clear the minimum

Nearly all the demand is on the graphics card. Among the popular cards we check, the RTX 2060 already clears the minimum, and so do the RX 6600 XT and the Arc B580. Every card we check above those clears it too, from the RTX 4060 up to the RX 9070 XT.

The trouble is one step down. The RTX 3050 and the GTX 1660 Super fall below the minimum, and so do the GTX 1060 6GB, the GTX 1650 and the RX 580. If you have one of those, do not expect the experience the studio has in mind.

Steam has not published recommended specs, so we cannot tell you yet what it takes to run it with headroom. That is why this post only covers the minimum. Steam has a downloadable demo: if your card is close to the line, that is the most direct way to test before you buy.
