Veterans: Napoleonic Wars, Tactical Boar’s real-time strategy game set in the Napoleonic era, launches today, October 28, in Early Access on Steam. It is a single-player game with no base building: you command thousands of soldiers and dozens of battalions at once, using line, column and square formations. Modest PCs get good news here, because the game asks for very little: a GTX 1060 or RX 580, 8 GB of RAM and just 3 GB of storage.

According to the studio’s roadmap, Early Access opens with ten battles (Montenotte, Arcole, Rivoli, Alexandria, Shubra Khit, Pyramids, Marengo, Austerlitz, Friedland and Wagram) plus a tutorial map. It also comes with a Day One patch built on feedback from the Steam Next Fest demo. For example, capturing the redoubt in the first mission now takes less time.

Veterans: Napoleonic Wars PC requirements

These are the official requirements from the Steam page. Minimum and recommended are nearly identical, and only the OS changes:

MinimumRecommended
GPUGTX 1060 (6 GB) or RX 580 (8 GB)GTX 1060 (6 GB) or RX 580 (8 GB)
CPUCore i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 2600Core i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 2600
RAM8 GB8 GB
Storage3 GB3 GB
OSWindows 10 64-bitWindows 11 64-bit

Both tiers require DirectX 12 and share the same target: stable 60 FPS at 1080p on medium settings. For now the game is Windows only, with no Mac or Linux version.

Which GPUs run it

Minimum and recommended ask for the same GPU, so if your card clears one, it clears the other. canirun grades are measured against the recommended requirement, assuming 16 GB of RAM:

  • GTX 1060 6GB: this is exactly the card the game asks for, so it grades B (Solid). See what else it runs on its page.
  • GTX 1660 Super, RTX 2060, RTX 3050, RX 6600 XT, RX 7600 and Arc B580: A (Smooth), with room to spare for the 1080p target.
  • RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 4060, RTX 3070 and up, plus the RX 9070 XT: S (Overkill).

Two cards sit on the edge. The RX 580 is named in the official requirements, but in the benchmarks canirun uses it scores below the GTX 1060. By our data it does not clear the minimum, and it grades C (Tight): expect very little headroom. If you own one, check its page. The GTX 1650 is in the same spot: by our scores it does not clear the minimum and also grades C.

What about the Steam Deck?

Valve has not verified it yet. Our estimate, based only on specs, gives it an F: by that estimate the Deck falls below the minimum. You can see the details on the game’s Steam Deck page.
