S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 update 2.1: new A-Life NPC distance option and what your PC needs
The Zone Lookout, update 2.1 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, adds an option to see A-Life NPCs from farther away. Here is what it brings, the PC requirements, and which GPUs clear the minimum and recommended specs.

GSC Game World released The Zone Lookout today, October 26. It is update 2.1 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl and the first major update after 2.0. The part that matters most for your PC is a new option to increase the distance at which A-Life NPCs are drawn, which means how much of the Zone’s life you see around you. The notes do not say how much performance it costs. According to GamingOnLinux, the update sounds fun if you have a powerful PC, and this game is already demanding.
What update 2.1 brings
The highlights from the official notes:
- A-Life distance: an option to increase the A-Life NPC visualisation distance.
- Binoculars: updated to work with the new streaming distances.
- Fast travel: a new system with squad leaders.
- Anomalies: they now work with the streaming distance and dead body interactions, and the CNPP arch-anomaly gets visual improvements.
- AI and combat: fixes for massive NPC or mutant spawns at Rostok, excessive mercenary spawns at Duga, NPCs aiming in unintended directions, and NPCs that would not attack unless you looked at them. Gunfights can also be heard from farther away based on the streaming distance.
What to do on your PC
The new setting is an option to increase the distance, so raising it is your call. The notes give no recommended values and no fps figures, so there is no official guidance on which value to pick. If your GPU sits near the minimum, keep in mind the game is already demanding at default settings.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 PC requirements

Which GPUs run it
The GTX 1650 falls short of the minimum. The GTX 1060 6GB clears it but grades F against the recommended: it launches, but it will struggle. The RTX 3060, RX 7600 and Arc B580 clear the minimum and grade D against the recommended. The RTX 4060 and RTX 3060 Ti move up to C. The RTX 4070 clears the recommended. The RTX 5070 and RX 9070 XT grade B, and the RTX 5080 grades A. Keep in mind our grades assume 16 GB of RAM, while the recommended spec asks for 32 GB.
On Steam Deck, Valve has not verified the game and lists it as unsupported. Our spec-based estimate puts it at F and below the minimum. That is an estimate, not a test: see the game’s Steam Deck page.
